[Visual Design] Skeleton Anatomy Part 1

For this 2 week assignment, I have been tasked to learn the fundamentals of how a skeleton looks and works because it is important to understand for drawing figures.

For the first part, my task was to locate the key parts of the skeleton and label them so that I had a feel of what the bones looked like and how they function.

[Visual Design] Speed Painting

For this week's assignment, we were tasked with training our eye to judge proportions and values by completing a speedpaint from reference and try to study the process. This speed painting took me about 2 hours to complete and I feel like from the two hours I have benefited from learning about spacing on the canvas and compositions, I have also learned a bit more about how light effects different colours and materials.

3D Art Production: Final Arena

This is the final textured screenshot of my battle arena in Maya, the texturing was extremely tough for me, but I am overall happy with the result, from being a complete novice with Maya to achieving this is satisfying for me.

[Visual Design] Dynamic Form

This week's visual design session was teaching how to apply dynamic form using values. We were told to use only 3 different values to create a strong form for a robot that had already been referenced and then practice with atmospheric perspective which is decreasing the values and contrast to simulate distance in a concept. I feel like I was successful in meeting the task's aims and have learnt some useful techniques for applying atmospheric perspective to my paintings for the future.

3D Art Production: Some Texture's for the Battle Arena

These are two examples of a normal map and a texture map for a pillar I am making on my battle arena, this may easily be the most challenging model to unwrap uv's for as it has a lot of individual edges and balancing them out to create balanced quality among the asset was a challenge, the normal map is used to further push the embossed parts of the asset and I am extremely satisfied with the result.

[Visual Design] Perspective and Lighting Assignment

For this assignment our task was to use what we were taught in class on how to create effective light and shadows and apply it to a mech/tank design.

I started with this mood board in order to help me get some starting ideas flowing and help me get a feel for how I wanted to go about the design.

I then moved on to drawing out some rough thumbnails to experiment with some shapes.

This was my final piece. Unfortunately, I wasnt happy with the result as I feel like i had too many curves in the final design that made the values a lot harder to paint in and correct.

[Visual Design] Tentacle Assignment

This week's assignment is to create a tentacle creature.

I started by getting a moodboard together for research purposes and to understand how tentacles work.

This is my design sheet where I looked into different ergonomics for the tentacles themselves and certain aspects of the creature herself.

This is my final piece here, I had a lot of fun with it and enjoyed the final outcome.

[Visual Assignment] Perspective Room Assignment

In class we were taught how to do two point perspective and this assignment was testing our knowledge on how to put it into practice by designing a room using this technique. I was quite happy with the end result as perspective is quite challenging for me.

3D Art Production: Completed Base Model for Battle Arena

After a few weeks I finally managed to complete the base model for my battle arena. I am really satisfied with how it has turned out so far and I hope that the model has been constructed efficiently enough to make my UV editing easy for myself.

[Visual Design] Lava Monster Assignment

For this piece, we were tasked with using the methods taught in class for creating lava effects and apply them in an illustration where we create a monster using the technique. I was quite happy with how this turned out and I really enjoyed the method.

[Visual Design] Lava Effect

In today's session we had to use the photoshop effects for creating lava and apply it to this clay model of a golem. I found this task a lot of fun except I did struggle initially finding the right settings.

3D Art Production: Battle Arena Moodboard and Concept Art

For our battle arena, we had to start with gathering a moodboard of reference images in order to achieve a result and genre that we are satisfied with, I chose to go for a sci fi themed arena, taking inspiration from Halo and Tron. I want to influence these themes in my resulting designs.

This is the result of trying to lay out a basic idea on paper, whether I will actually go with this design or not will be interesting, but having an idea drawn out on paper initially will make the modeling process much easier for myself.

[Visual Design] Futuristic Weapon Assignment

I started off with a moodboard and a collection of all of the designs that interested me, i really liked the exaggerated shapes of the guns and i wanted to experiment with that through my design process.

I did a few rough sketches, starting off with some exaggerated shapes and trying to get an interesting shape, my favourite design that i went for was a very sleek design and concealable pistol.

I worked into one of the designs and this was the result, I enjoyed working with the bright colours and the sleek design.

3D Art Production: Column

For this session, we were tasked with learning how to use a reference image in order to effectively model a column. We took a standard imagine of a column and applied it to a plane that we set up beside our model in order to accurately achieve a good result.

[Visual Design] Crustacean Assignment

This assignment was to use the silhouette technique from feng zhu in order to create 3 designs for a crustacean.

I started by doing some research and creating a moodboard of interesting images.

These were my final three designs, I really enjoyed this assignment and tried my best to create as much variation as possible.

[Visual Design] Caterpillar Painting Assignment

This was a piece done in class to paint over an existing sketch to get comfortable with digital painting.

Sunday 27 September 2015

[Visual Design] Perspective Assignment

This was an assignment to use the one point perspective techniques used in class to create our own image.

[Visual Design] Robot Speedpaint

This was a classwork task to get used to digital painting by quickly laying in values in order to recreate a copy of another image.

3D Art Production: Barrel

This was the result of my first tries of using Maya, during the process, I learned how to model from a cube and learned how to utilize subdivisons in order to get an effective looking model, we were supposed to UV map this barrel, but in the end the texture files didnt work due to the Alpha Channels still being active on the resulting targa file.

[Visual Design] Robot Design Assignment

In order to test our skill with a traditional medium, we were tasked to design this robot. I was happy with the end result, but the scan was not as good as I had hoped.
